The owners of Bedroom Solutions in San Luis Obispo are convinced that comfortable mattresses can improve health overall.
Every day, Phoebe Reis, her son, Dean Walker, and her longtime family friend Karly Wages hear the same complaints: backache, hip pain and shoulder ailments.
No, they're not chiropractors.
The trio operates Bedroom Solutions, a San Luis Obispo mattress and bedroom furniture shop. Reis is the owner of the store, which opened in October of 2005.
The three have been in the furniture business for a combined 30 plus years but have never witnessed a transformation so dramatic as the one the mattress industry has undergone in the past two years. New materials and modes of construction are aimed at increasing comfort, durability and, according to the Bedroom Solutions team, better health.
"Our store is unique because we're geared toward pain relief," said Walker, citing their inventory of specialty products such as adjustable beds and memory foam mattresses.
Their unique focus was inspired by the relief that Reis herself found from fibromyalgia and arthritis.
"People don't realize that what kind of bed you sleep on can affect your daily activities, alleviate your pain or make it worse," Wages said. "We can recommend what different mattresses can do in terms of support and comfort."
Of particular therapeutic value are the memory foam and latex mattresses, which claim to aid spinal alignment and cushion joints. Proponents of these new materials say that, because foam molds to your body, your weight is evenly distributed and not concentrated on a few pressure points. Hitting pressure points can, at the very least, cause numbness and discomfort. For some, it can aggravate aches and injuries.
Even regular mattresses have come a long way. Foam encasement offers better stability, support and durability. Laminated layers prevent the dreaded "body indentation" that inevitably develops after a few years. They even eliminate the odious chore of mattress flipping.
Besides aches and pains, another health concern the Bedroom Solutions team often hears about is that of the allergenic (not to mention nasty) dust mites, which thrive in most bedding. Wages offered this unsettling fact “They say that a mattress can take on fifty percent of its weight in dust mites and their leavings." If dust mite allergies are a concern, she suggests opting for an anti-microbial treated mattress or investing in a foam mattress, which is less likely to harbor critters.
While the newest and best mattresses are certainly higher on the price scale, they are, thankfully, also made to last.
"Mattresses used to wear out in around five or ten years,” said Wages. "Now they should last around twenty." Besides, according to the Bedroom solutions team, it's hard to put a price on a good, healthy night's sleep.
